After the third performance of Otello, at a banquet the Otello tenor was seated next to his soprano Desdemona. Half way through the main course he turned and said, “You know, I rather like this opera, but there’s one thing I don’t understand. It’s so silly. Why does Otello get so excited about a mere handkerchief?”
